His vision is of an extreme noise EP topped off by a delicate female voice. Serendipity comes calling in the shape of a shared management relationship with Slowdive’s Rachel Goswell. Her musical appetite fully restored with the feted reunion of her original band, tracks are shared and two songs take shape. The two have never met.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003ePerhaps another guitarist might be good on one or two tracks? Names are suggested, Rachel mentions that she has seen a fair amount of Mogwai’s Stuart Braithwaite on Slowdive’s summer trips around the world’s fields and they have become good friends. This is agreed as a very good idea by the pair. Stuart listens and adds guitars. Stuart has never met Justin. He’s in. He has some other ideas that perhaps might be added to the collection of tracks?\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eJustin and Rachel meet briefly at Latitude. For literally minutes. I can confirm this. I was there. They meet again and properly at Crear in Northern Scotland with Editors starting recording of fifth studio album, ‘In Dream’, to which Rachel contributes vocals. Justin has still not met Stuart. The first song Justin plays through the PA at Crear whilst setting up is an early version of ‘Out To Sea’.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eLulls and stops follow as the individual’s other band’s stuff gets in the way. Rachel phones Justin after a night out and asks the question outright, ‘are we finishing this stuff or what?’. Justin plays the stuff to his brother James, former member of BEF, bass player, partner in film makers Hand Held Cine Club. James likes the stuff. He has a few things on his hard drive. Perhaps they could be added? The EP grows into something indefinably bigger. James has never met Rachel or Stuart.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eJames journeys to Glasgow to work on his tracks with Stuart and engineer Tony Doogan at Mogwai’s Castle of Doom Studio. James is understandably apprehensive, he’s staying at Stuart’s house and, remember, he’s never met him. In two days the pair lay down tracks so quickly that the second day sees them looking for parts to record. Stuart plays drums on some tracks, James plays everything on ‘Cogs’, Stuart and James have now met but Stuart has still not met Justin.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eJustin sits in Newcastle at the centre of an increasing spider’s web of recordings and additional people contributing, James from Twilight Sad on ‘Scattered Ashes’, Mark Kozelek on his lyric ‘For You Always’, editing and re-editing, Skyping and sending and the extreme noise EP becomes an album that starts to feature all the contributor’s various tastes. Justin hardly picks up his guitar, his role has mutated to something between orchestrator and engineer, adding the strings and orchestral washes, the clicks and the ambient noise that swell these already vast tracks into something beyond the original vision of any of the contributors. The virtual geography of the band now spans the country from Exeter to Glasgow and across the Atlantic.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eJustin finally meets Stuart. Stuart is in Newcastle at a gig. He mentions the project to a friend who points out that Justin’s house is around the corner. Drinks are arranged, bonds are quickly forged. James has still never met Rachel.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eOver the course of six months this bunch of virtual and real mates, this band that has never actually all been in the same room at the same time swap ideas and songs, fragments and finished recordings through broadband connections. Layers are added and taken away, Rachel receives tranches of instrumentals to add lyrics and vocals and works with partner Steve Clarke, another addition to the cast, to create finished songs.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eSo, is this a band or not? Bands hang out and play in rehearsal rooms don’t they?\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003ci\u003e‘It’s a band’\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e, all four insist individually (naturally) on Skype. More so, the album is a product of that very process. As Justin sagely notes, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003ci\u003e‘people don’t realise how many band don’t talk to each other’\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e in marked contrast to this wired network with a process which Rachel explains as \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003ci\u003e‘this real excitement about what we are doing, emails and texts flying in all day from everyone’\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e. James points to the whole recording period as being \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003ci\u003e‘weirdly, lacking in any stress, things just happened’ \u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eand all remark that the lack of fixed sessions and schedules meant that they could contribute at their own pace in their own time and on their own terms. Rachel goes so far as to suggest that her vocals would not have been as they are were that conventional route have been followed, citing a set up that allowed her \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003ci\u003e‘a freedom to be more expressive’\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e. Stuart talks of \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003ci\u003e‘the space to add’\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e to the music free of immediate opinions. Freedom is a word that all use, that sense that anything was possible and all ideas would be considered. Humility is a word that those looking in might add, a gathering of talented individuals prepared to step back from their own individual egos to allow the whole to prosper.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eStuart in an aside suggests that \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003ci\u003e‘it’s quite a miracle that people with such busy lives found time to make this record’\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e and yet Minor Victories, the album, is a record that all four, with their vast experience of making records, describe as lacking in pressure. According to Justin, that’s for a very simple reason, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003ci\u003e‘we don’t have to prove to people we’re a good band, the standard of the music meant that we aren’t dragging anyone along for the ride. At the start, and all the way through, we were doing it for the fuck of it, to make something we know is good’.\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eThat spirit, the real essence of what Minor Victories are about, a twist on the ‘anyone can do it’ ethic of punk towards ‘you can do anything’ means that Minor Victories are far more than one album of songs. The films that began with a 90 second short last year featuring a Doncaster TV repairman grooving in his shop will continue to define the band, helmed by Justin and James. Further shorts will add to the approach. According to James, actors will be \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003ci\u003e‘local and not pros’\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e, locations will be in his home town of Doncaster, a further non-conventional addition to the project, the aim being \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003ci\u003e‘to shoot things that are normally not seen, to use something that is normal to me in a way that makes it remarkable’\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eSoon the project that became a band that have never been together in the same room becomes a public reality and the album that started life as an EP will be available for all to hear. For the band this is as much of a surprise as it may be for those waiting to hear it. Stuart still marvels that it has happened, saying \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003ci\u003e‘starting a band where some of the people have never met each other is something I’ve never heard of’\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e, James wonders how \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003ci\u003e‘I’ve made a record with people I’d never have imagined I would have the chance to work with’\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e whilst Rachel describes it as \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003ci\u003e‘the most exciting thing I’ve done to date’\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e. As for Justin, whose itch began the whole process, he still hasn’t quite worked out what his little noise EP has become but is beginning to think that \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003ci\u003e‘we’ve stealthily made the record I always have wanted to make without me actually realising it’\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eAnd, in case you are still wondering, James finally met Rachel in London recently. I can confirm this. Richer melodies, pianos, and even trumpets made their way into the recording sessions at Sound Studio in Sweden, where Silkjær, Frederik Nybo Veile (drums) and Tobias Guldborg Tarp (bass) decamped with a handful of guest musicians. Consider the airy, self-referential “The Child,” a reverie or languid guitar lines punctuated by a horn line; the mid-tempo swagger of “Uncombed Hair,” suddenly amping up without losing control; or the slow build of “The Hatch,” its anthemic scope and chugging drums lines showing a new compositional mastery without losing the immediacy and energy of past efforts. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eComing from a musical family in the punk rock capital of Denmark, Mikkel rejected any musical involvement at first, essentially not wanting to be like his dad. With the help of Kent's famed The Numbers Band (15-60-75), they recorded their next single \u003cem\u003e'Prime of My Life \/ In My Room'\u003c\/em\u003e, later to be released on the band's own Square label.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAfter the release of the single, the band met bass player Dave Schramm who helped round out the sound. Shortly thereafter, they were invited to play at Hurrah, the premier new wave night club in New York City. The club was impressed enough with the sound that they invited them back to play regularly. At the same time, the band also started playing other legendary clubs such as Maxwell's in Hoboken, NJ, The Rat in Boston and the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC. They continued playing more dates in New York with a new bass player George Scott III, formerly of the Eight Eyed Spy, James White and the Blacks and The Raybeats. The East Coast was becoming very friendly to them, but they still lacked a major record release.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAt this time, a fan recorded and released a 'bootleg' with the band's blessing and help. The band went back to SUMA, this time with bass player Doug Morgan, and recorded two songs \u003cem\u003e'Who's Landing in My Hangar?'\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003e'I Can Walk Alone'\u003c\/em\u003e. These two songs would then be backed with a re-release of \u003cem\u003e'In My Room'\u003c\/em\u003e from the year before. They sought out and enlisted Jared Michael Nickerson from Dayton, Ohio to play bass and offer inspiration towards the new sound they were after. The bass lines became funkier and once again, the band tried to gain interest from the record companies. This is when they met John Stains from Polydor Records. Polydor was on a roll at that time with hits from bands like The Waitresses and was looking to expand upon the 'new wave' sound. John helped finance demos that the band recorded over a two week stretch in December of 1983. The Switchboard would setup up on the stage of CBGBs during the afternoons and recorded a series of a dozen songs onto the club's 16 track machine.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe recordings were fleshing out nicely when suddenly, the rug was pulled out from them as John was let go from the record company. They are already living it. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eTo some it may be only a track on an album, the first release of the new Bible and Tire Recording Co. label. But for the Sensational Barnes Brothers, it expresses an unbreakable bond with their own father, Calvin “Duke” Barnes. As with all the songs on this, their debut LP, produced by Bruce Watson of Bible and Tire Recording Co.\/Big Legal Mess Records at Delta-Sonic Studios in Memphis, it was chosen from the oft-forgotten 1970s catalog of the Designer Records label, but it could well have been written by the Barnes family themselves. For there, in a nutshell, are all the bonds that hold them close.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eChris Barnes was a little stunned to hear the song as they combed through hundreds of Designer tracks with Watson one day. “We were listening to the song and the guy on the recording sounded just like my daddy. I was like, 'We gotta do this song!' And the message really stuck out to us.”\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003e“It's crazy for that to be the song he sang with us. You can hear all the conversations he used to have with you through that one piece of music,” adds brother Courtney. It's a poignant moment, for only three months after the brothers invited him to sing on their album, Duke Barnes passed away. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003e“It was out of the blue—very unexpected. He was 65. Fairly young, really,” notes Chris.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003e“You're always counting your days, learning how to number your days,” reflects Courtney. “Count it all joy, and we're thankful for the life that he lived and that he gave.”\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAnd give he did, as Duke made his way through the world with his beloved wife Deborah. She was the daughter of Rev. James L. Gleese, who founded the Beale Street Mission for Blacks\/Negroes, and music came to her even more naturally. But though she had studied piano and voice at what was then Memphis State University, she wasn't prepared when the phone rang in the Gleese household one day. “Hello, this is Ray Charles,” said the voice on the line. She answered the call and for a time became a Raelette, one of the background singers for the genius of soul, before love, marriage and children demanded that she leave the touring life behind. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eBut that didn't stop her from counting it all joy. Indeed, Duke and Deborah Barnes became a sought-after duo around Memphis, especially in the Seventh Day Adventist community, singing at concerts, church events and weddings. In 1985, “God Will Take Care of You,” their single on Three Angels Records, got a fair amount of radio play. And over the years, flowers blossomed in their garden, by the name of Calvin, Jr., Chris, and Carla. “And I was the one who came regardless,” laughs Courtney. “Up there it was like, 'Y'all gonna keep acting like you're acting, I'm gonna send somebody!'”  \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eBy the 1990s, the four youngsters, their diverse musical talents steadily encouraged and coached by the parents, were assembled into a performing group in their own right, known as Joy. “We performed a lot,” recalls Courtney. “In our performances, my mom and dad would do the first section. They would sing, and we would be the background. Then in the next set it flipped over to where the children would do our thing, and that would be the Barnes Family concert.” \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe family carried on as musical collaborators for years. Indeed, they still play and sing together, even with their father gone. “Eventually we let the name Joy go,” says Courtney. “We started singing together as just the Barnes Family. And in 2015 we released an album, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003cspan\u003eFamily Tree\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e. With the four of us and Calvin's wife Mischa. Now Chris and I are doing the Sensational Barnes Brothers as a duo, and it's interesting. I really enjoy it! But we've always sung together. We've been a part of different groups and played in different bands — just a lot of different connections and entities.”\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThis is an understatement. For a time, Courtney played with a rock band chiefly influenced by Disturbed and Dream Theater. Now he and Chris, on drums, percussion, and vocals, front Black Cream, which is reinventing the classic power trio sound. Chris has sung background vocals for the Bar Kays, and now has joined their longtime singer Larry Dodson in the launch of his solo career. Calvin, Jr., for his part, is a gifted instrumentalist, singer, and producer. Sister Carla, the only sibling to have left Memphis, still sings. Music is clearly a family calling. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAnd now, as the Sensational Barnes Brothers, they are bringing it all back home to music they grew up with. Says Courtney, “This new record is more edgy. Our parents taught us how to harmonize, to be more controlled. So this record opens us up. It's more raw. I'm usually not a squaller, unless I'm excited.” \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eChris adds, “It allowed us to step outside of ourselves, with this free flowing, rugged, edgy kind of music. It's gospel, but it's not necessarily for just a Christian audience even. You can sing this at festivals and parks, anywhere. Often ill as a child, she turned to song as a way to get through. As she grew up, she learned to interpret them in her own style. She laughs as she says, “I like to move when I sing.”\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eMarried and moving to Memphis in 1960, followed by a short stint in Chicago (“I couldn’t get used to the weather or how they went to church”), then back to Memphis, King first joined the Gospel Souls in 1969 after seeing them in concert. (The male vocal band had previously been on Halo Records and Designer Records, the latter catalogue explored in several exemplary Big Legal Mess releases.) She had always envisioned being backed by male singers. She was told, “If they got jealous wives, I wouldn’t.” But it worked out. She says, “I stayed 33 years with them.”\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eProducer Juan D. Shipp, a gospel DJ-cum-label impresario, thought he would get a richer sound than the gospel music studios in common use in Memphis at the time when he stumbled on Tempo Studios downtown, which became his go-to. “It was a compact studio but boy did it sound good,” Shipp recalls, continuing, “You had to walk up the stairs to it.” He first recorded King and the Gospel Souls in 1972, issuing “I Heard The Voice” (which was later sub-leased to the Messenger label).\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eShipp continues, “When you come to the studio, I worked the devil out of you to make it what it should be. We were working at ‘I Heard The Voice.’ I said, ‘Sing it like you making love to God.’ That song skyrocketed. It was 5½ years at #1. Nobody could sing it like the original!”\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eShipp brought in Lynn Askew on guitar and musicians affiliated with Tempo Studios for the rhythm section and keys.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWorking a day job for a florist, she was in a serious car accident that inspired “I Heard The Voice” B-side “Waiting on the Lord.” King says, “I had no feeling in my body. I couldn’t do nothing but pray. The fire department had to cut me out of it. I thought about it that day, that song.” She still has pain in her body every day.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWhen the single was released, it caught on quickly. “I was riding down Union Ave.,” says King. “Rev. Shipp, he was on [the radio]. I say, ‘What,’ turn up the radio real loud. A guy from Memphis was at the red light. I said, ‘It’s me!.’ Every day, look like every twenty minutes, they was playing it. The phone started to ring. It kept us going everywhere.”\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIn order for King and the Gospel Souls to tour, but keep their day jobs and church commitments in town, they would hit the road on weekends, playing Saturday night and Sunday evening, eating after each concert, and driving back to Memphis in time to be at work by 8AM Monday morning. Plus, King would attend church services during the weeknights and work on choir rehearsals on Tuesday nights.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe band was once asked to perform for inmates at the Tennessee State Prison farm near downtown Nashville, TN. “Everything was on lockdown ‘cause womens was fighting. I was so scared. It’s an album about the importance of \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003efollowing your dreams, in spite of romantic relationships going sour and the pressure that comes with being a young Black man who grew up with a fair share of hardships, and about the \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eimportance of following your dreams.
